The Benefits of a Positive Bedtime Routine for Babies and Children

A good bedtime routine helps relax and calm your child so your child is ready for sleep. It also helps your child develop positive sleep habits now and for the future.

A bedtime routine can have a few steps, but the aim is that you do similar activities in almost the same way each night. This consistency allows your child to feel safe, develop their life skills and build healthy habits. Routines also help parents feel organised, reduce stress, and find time for enjoyable activities and connection with their kids.

Most bedtime routines include tasks like having a bath and brushing teeth, as well as quiet, enjoyable activities like reading a book, listening to a story or having a cuddle. The aim is to keep the atmosphere calm and confident, using positive attention and praise.

An early-evening bath is a relaxing way to prepare your child for bed. Make sure that you are prepared with all your lotions and needs within arm’s reach. As this is a daily routine, try using harsh soap free body wash to avoid drying out your infant’s tender skin. Premium natural ingredients like Australian Avocado Oil, Chamomile or Avena Sativa (Oat) all have properties that may help to moisturise and protect your baby’s delicate skin.

Make the after-bath experience more pleasant by cradling your child in a towel or giving him a massage. Infant massage promotes bonding between you and your child while also helping a baby relax and release tensions of daily stimuli so they will be much calmer and ready for a restful sleep.

Once it is time for bed try and make the process as peaceful and predictable as possible. Caressing, singing, playing soft music, and setting a radio to static are just a few of the many effective ways to signal that the day is over.
